Community Heritage

We’ve Been Through It All

Some of the oldest cities in the Commonwealth of Kentucky are JCLC members. The Cities of Jeffersontown and Middletown both were established in 1797. The City of Lyndon was established in 1871, and the City of Anchorage was established in 1878.

These cities have a heritage that dates to early Jefferson County settlers who established these communities before their actual dates of incorporation as municipalities.

Because of these early settlers establishing communities in the 1700s and 1800s, many historic homes in Jefferson County are located in JCLC Home Rule Cities. Some are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Several other Jefferson County Home Rule Cities were incorporated between 1900 and the 1950s, incorporating communities that were settled in the early 1900s. A significant number of Home Rule Cities were incorporated between 1960 and 1990 as suburban growth developed neighborhoods out of historic farms, schools or private enterprise sites. These developments were near existing Home Rule Cities, and residents chose to incorporate their communities in order to establish representative government closest to the people for best delivery of services.
